Domestic abuse can take many forms and may involve physical violence, coercive or controlling behaviour, intimidation, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, economic abuse, stalking, harassment or technology-facilitated abuse. People may need different kinds of support depending on their circumstances, location, identity, immediate safety and the type of help they are seeking.
This page brings together specialist domestic-abuse services and directories for people in Romania, the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, alongside selected resources for digital safety and professional information. The organisations listed here provide specialist services or referral information; Metamorphosis Wellness does not provide crisis intervention, emergency response, refuge accommodation, legal advice or clinical treatment.
If you are in immediate danger or believe someone is at immediate risk of serious harm, contact the emergency services in your location. If it is safe to do so, a specialist domestic-abuse service can also help you understand the options available in your circumstances.
A note about privacy and digital safety
If another person may monitor your phone, browser, email, accounts or internet use, accessing information about domestic abuse can carry additional privacy considerations. Specialist organisations can provide guidance tailored to technology-facilitated abuse and digital safety. The Safety Net Project develops technology-safety information specifically for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and trafficking.
Rather than following generic online instructions that may not be appropriate to your circumstances, consider using specialist digital-safety resources or speaking with a domestic-abuse service about your individual situation.
Romania
ANES National Helpline
The Romanian National Agency for Equal Opportunities between Women and Men — Agenția Națională pentru Egalitatea de Șanse între Femei și Bărbați (ANES) — operates a free national helpline for people affected by domestic violence. The service also covers trafficking in persons and certain forms of discrimination.
The current national helpline number is 0800 500 333. ANES states that the helpline is free to call from Romanian national networks and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It can provide initial information, guidance and referral towards relevant local services and institutions.
People outside Romania, or people seeking specialist services across several European countries, may also find the WAVE directory below useful.
United Kingdom
Different UK services support different populations and needs. The resources below are labelled accordingly so that people can identify the service that is most relevant to them.
Refuge: National Domestic Abuse Helpline
Refuge operates the National Domestic Abuse Helpline for women in England. The current freephone number is 0808 2000 247, and Refuge states that the telephone helpline is available 24 hours a day. Online support is also available through the helpline website.
Women’s Aid
Women’s Aid provides information for women experiencing domestic abuse as well as a directory of specialist local domestic-abuse services. Its Survivor’s Handbook covers practical information about seeking support, while its domestic-abuse directory can help people locate services in their area.
Men’s Advice Line
The Men’s Advice Line provides specialist support for male victims of domestic abuse and for people supporting them. Its current freephone number is 0808 801 0327. The service also provides information about local services, refuge or safe accommodation, housing, legal information and other specialist support. Current opening hours should always be checked directly on its website, as these may change.
Galop: LGBT+ specialist support
Galop provides specialist support for LGBT+ people experiencing abuse or violence, including domestic abuse. Its National Helpline for LGBT+ Victims and Survivors of Abuse and Violence can currently be reached on 0800 999 5428, with email and web-based options also available. Opening hours are published on Galop’s website and should be checked there because service times can change.
Europe
WAVE: Find Help Database
Women Against Violence Europe (WAVE) maintains a specialist Find Help database covering services across Europe. The database includes national women’s helplines as well as regional services such as shelters, counselling centres and sexual-violence services. WAVE also provides cross-border referral support through its Information Centre.
This is particularly useful for people who are travelling, living outside their country of origin, or looking for specialist services in a European country not listed individually on this page.
United States
National Domestic Violence Hotline
The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides free and confidential domestic-violence support in the United States. Current contact options include calling 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), texting START to 88788, and using live chat through the organisation’s website. The Hotline states that its support is available 24/7.
The website also provides access to local providers, legal resources and additional specialist services.
National Network to End Domestic Violence
The National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) maintains an extensive resource library covering domestic violence, survivor support, policy, economic justice, technology safety and professional resources. It is particularly useful for people looking for educational material or organisations working in the field rather than as a substitute for a crisis helpline.
Digital and technology-facilitated abuse
Technology may be used within abusive relationships to monitor, harass, intimidate or control. The appropriate response can depend heavily on the devices, accounts and circumstances involved, and generic instructions may not be safe for everyone.
The Safety Net Project provides specialist resources about technology, privacy and safety for survivors and professionals. Its materials cover areas such as device and account privacy, technology misuse and the use of digital services within survivor support.
Resources for professionals
SafeLives
SafeLives provides research, guidance, training and practical resources for professionals and services responding to domestic abuse in the United Kingdom. Its resources are designed for frontline and specialist professional contexts rather than as individual crisis support.
Professional tools relating to domestic-abuse risk, safeguarding or intervention should be used within the appropriate professional role, competence and local procedures rather than treated as general self-assessment tools.
If you are supporting someone else
Friends, relatives and colleagues may sometimes recognise that someone appears frightened, controlled, isolated or unsafe without knowing what to do next. Specialist organisations generally recommend approaches that preserve the person’s agency rather than forcing decisions on their behalf.
Women’s Aid provides dedicated information for people supporting survivors and directs people towards local specialist services where appropriate.Women’s Aid, The National Domestic Violence Hotline and other organisations listed above also provide guidance for people concerned about someone else.
Where there is no immediate emergency, specialist domestic-abuse services are usually better placed to discuss options than general advice pages because the safest and most appropriate response can depend on the individual situation.
