
Human behaviour can be studied at many levels. We can examine what a person does, what they think or feel, the physiological processes accompanying an experience, what they have learned, the relationships in which particular responses occur, or the environmental and social conditions within which they are functioning. Each perspective may contribute something important, but problems arise when one level of analysis is treated as though it provides the whole explanation of the person.
At Metamorphosis Wellness, the term human organisation provides a way of approaching this problem more carefully. It refers to the current configuration of a human system: the arrangement of relevant components and relationships that characterises how that system is presently organised at the level of analysis being considered. The purpose is not to construct an all-encompassing explanation of human behaviour. It is to establish more precisely what is currently being described before moving to questions about why that organisation exists, what may maintain it, or whether meaningful change has taken place.
This distinction matters because observation and explanation are easily collapsed. A recurring behaviour can quickly become a personality judgement; a physiological response can be presented as the cause of an entire experience; a relational pattern can be attributed to an individual’s internal characteristics without adequate consideration of the relationship or environment in which it occurs. Human organisation offers a different starting point. Before asking why, it asks: what is currently organised here, and at what level are we describing it?
Human behaviour exists at more than one level of analysis
The idea that human phenomena can be considered at different levels is not new. Across psychology, neuroscience, behavioural science, developmental science, sociology and health research, different disciplines have developed methods for investigating different aspects of human functioning. Their explanations often overlap, but they are not necessarily answering identical questions.
George Engel’s influential biopsychosocial model, for example, was proposed partly in response to the limits of restricting accounts of illness to biomedical processes alone. His argument was not that biology was unimportant, but that psychological, behavioural and social dimensions could also be scientifically relevant to understanding human health and illness. Later multilevel work in social neuroscience similarly argued that biological and social levels of analysis can make complementary contributions rather than requiring one to be treated as the only meaningful explanatory level.
This matters well beyond health research. Consider something relatively ordinary: a person becomes noticeably quiet whenever disagreement arises in a particular setting. The behaviour itself can be observed and described. A cognitive researcher might investigate expectations or attentional processes associated with the situation. A physiological study might examine changes occurring during the interaction. A learning account might ask what consequences have historically followed speaking or remaining silent. A relational analysis could examine how the other people involved respond. A contextual analysis might consider whether the behaviour appears across environments or only under particular conditions.
These are potentially related enquiries, but they are not interchangeable. Evidence about physiological activity does not automatically explain the organisation of a relationship. Observing a behaviour does not establish what originally produced it. Identifying a belief does not prove that the belief is the sole cause of the response. Contextual influences do not make individual characteristics irrelevant. The appropriate level of analysis depends on the phenomenon being investigated and the question being asked.
Human organisation therefore begins with analytical clarity. Before deciding which theory should explain something, it is useful to determine what exactly requires explanation.
Organisation is more than a list of components
Describing a human system organisationally does not simply mean compiling a longer list of variables. A person might be described in terms of cognition, emotion, physiology, behaviour, relationships and environmental circumstances, yet such a list still tells us relatively little about how those elements are configured in the phenomenon we are trying to understand.
The difference between components and configuration is important. Two people may possess broadly similar skills, knowledge or capabilities yet function very differently under particular conditions. A person may clearly demonstrate a capacity in one environment but struggle to access or express it in another. The same behaviour may carry very different significance depending on the pattern of relationships surrounding it. A response that appears inexplicable when isolated from its context may become more intelligible when the wider configuration is examined.
Several systems-oriented traditions within human science have taken relationships among components seriously. Dynamic systems approaches to development, for example, have examined how patterns can emerge through interactions among multiple processes over time rather than assuming that complex behaviour must always be traced back to a single controlling factor. Relational developmental perspectives have similarly emphasised ongoing relations between individuals and their contexts rather than treating development as the product of either the person or the environment in isolation.
These traditions should not be collapsed into a single theory, and human organisation is not simply another name for dynamic systems theory, developmental systems theory or the biopsychosocial model. Their relevance is more fundamental: they demonstrate why studying the components of a human phenomenon and studying their organisation are not necessarily the same analytical task.
The point is also not that every investigation needs to include every conceivable dimension of human life. Quite the opposite. An explanation that attempts to contain biology, cognition, emotion, behaviour, relationships, culture, history and social structure regardless of the question can become so inclusive that it ceases to be precise. The relevant organisation must be bounded by the problem under investigation.
A useful organisational analysis therefore asks which components are actually relevant, what relationships among them are being observed or proposed, and why the chosen level of analysis is appropriate.

Description and explanation should not be confused
One of the most important distinctions in thinking about human organisation is the difference between describing the current configuration of a system and explaining how that configuration came to exist.
Suppose a recurring pattern involves particular expectations, behaviours and interpersonal responses. It may be possible to describe that pattern accurately. We might establish when it occurs, when it does not, which behaviours tend to accompany it and how other people typically respond. Yet none of this, by itself, establishes its origin. Nor does it tell us which mechanism is responsible for maintaining the pattern, whether the same organisation developed for the same reasons in another person, or what would need to change for the organisation itself to alter.
The distinction is easy to overlook because everyday psychological language often contains explanation within description. Someone who repeatedly delays an action is described as unmotivated. A difficult conversation becomes evidence that someone is avoidant. A period of heightened physiological activation is described as a nervous-system problem. A recurring behaviour is attributed to trauma without evidence establishing that history or mechanism.
These interpretations may occasionally be appropriate, but they move beyond observation. They introduce claims about meaning, mechanism or causation.
There is nothing inherently wrong with making explanatory claims. Science depends on them. The problem arises when the evidential step between description and explanation disappears.
A human organisational perspective therefore asks us to establish the present configuration before assigning a causal account to it. What is actually observed? What is inferred? Which aspects of the pattern are stable? Which vary according to context? What is known about the relationships among the relevant components, and what remains hypothetical?
This does not make explanation less important. It makes explanation more disciplined.
Context can be part of the organisation we are trying to understand
People do not behave identically across every relationship, setting or demand. Someone may communicate easily with close friends but struggle to express themselves in a formal institutional environment. A person may make complex decisions effectively under ordinary circumstances but find relatively simple decisions difficult during periods of substantial competing demand. A response may occur consistently within one relationship yet be largely absent elsewhere.
Such variation matters analytically. If a phenomenon changes systematically according to context, then context may be part of what needs to be understood rather than merely the background against which an internal process occurs.
This does not require us to treat the environment as the cause of everything. Nor does it deny the importance of individual characteristics. The relevant question is one of analytical boundaries. Are we trying to describe a process within the individual, the individual across different environments, an interaction between people, or a wider pattern involving institutional or environmental constraints?
Different questions may justify different boundaries.
This is especially important because explanations of human behaviour often shift between analytical levels without acknowledging that a shift has occurred. A social problem may suddenly be described entirely in neurobiological terms. A behaviour observed within a highly specific environment may become evidence for a general characteristic of the individual. A subjective experience may be interpreted as direct evidence of an underlying mechanism.
The more complex the phenomenon, the more carefully those movements between levels need to be justified.
Human organisation does not dictate where the correct boundary should always be drawn. Instead, it asks us to make the boundary visible.
Organisation is not a synonym for pathology
Another important consequence follows from using organisation descriptively. To describe a human system as organised in a particular way is not to declare that organisation healthy, unhealthy, functional, dysfunctional, normal or pathological.
Those are separate evaluations.
A pattern may be understandable within a particular environment while also carrying significant costs. A behaviour may solve an immediate problem while creating difficulties over time. A relational strategy may provide predictability while reducing flexibility. A response that was effective under one set of conditions may become poorly matched to another.
Equally, persistence does not automatically indicate disorder. The fact that a response continues tells us that something is relatively stable or recurrent. It does not tell us why. Persistent patterns may involve learning, environmental reinforcement, relational conditions, habits, physiological constraints, expectations, structural pressures or other processes. In many cases, several explanations may remain plausible until evidence allows them to be distinguished.
This is one reason simplistic explanations of human behaviour can be misleading. The nervous system, for example, is unquestionably relevant to human functioning, but describing every persistent behaviour as a nervous-system response risks moving from an important level of analysis to an unnecessarily totalising explanation. Similarly, interpreting every enduring difficulty through the language of trauma can obscure other developmental, behavioural, relational, contextual or structural explanations.
A more careful approach preserves the possibility of several levels of explanation while requiring each claim to earn its place.
Human organisation is not a theory of everything
The concept also requires a boundary in the opposite direction. If human organisation were simply a way of saying that many things influence human behaviour, it would add little. Nearly any observation could be accommodated, and the concept would become too broad to challenge.
The purpose of human organisation is therefore not to provide a universal explanatory theory. It does not tell us which specific mechanism produced a behaviour, which intervention would change it, or which scientific theory is correct. Those questions require substantive explanatory theories and empirical investigation.
Instead, the concept focuses attention on the object of explanation. What is the present configuration being considered? Which level or levels of organisation are relevant? Which relationships are observed and which are inferred? Where does description end and mechanistic explanation begin?
This distinction is particularly useful in interdisciplinary work because different theories can appear to disagree when they are actually addressing different questions. A theory about learning, for example, may not be attempting to explain the same phenomenon as a theory about physiological regulation or relational interaction. Before asking which theory is better, it can therefore be useful to establish whether they are genuinely competing explanations.
Human organisation does not resolve those debates. It provides a more disciplined starting point from which to have them.
Human Organisation and the developing Metamorphosis Integration Model
Human Organisation is also one area of enquiry within the developing Metamorphosis Integration Model (MIM). MIM is currently being developed as a proposed second-order analytical architecture concerned with how explanations of human organisational change might be organised more clearly across different theoretical and disciplinary traditions.
Within that developing work, Human Organisation addresses a deliberately focused question: what is the current organisation of the human system? Its purpose is descriptive rather than mechanistic. It establishes the present configuration under consideration rather than attempting, within the same analytical question, to explain how that configuration originated or what processes account for its persistence or change.
The fuller MIM architecture is currently under development and is intended for formal academic publication. Its propositions therefore remain subject to conceptual refinement, critical examination and future empirical evaluation. The purpose of introducing Human Organisation here is not to reproduce that developing architecture, but to clarify one of the broader questions informing the research programme.
The distinction is important. The scientific traditions discussed in this article, including multilevel analysis and systems-oriented approaches, exist independently of MIM. They provide part of the wider intellectual context in which questions about human organisation can be considered. MIM makes a separate and more specific analytical proposition, and that proposition should not be presented as though it has already been empirically established.
A more precise starting point
Human beings are complex, but simply acknowledging complexity is not enough. The challenge is to describe complex phenomena without either reducing them prematurely to one mechanism or expanding the explanation until everything appears equally relevant.
Human organisation provides one way of establishing that analytical discipline. It asks us first to characterise the present configuration at the level appropriate to the phenomenon being examined. It requires us to distinguish components from relationships, observation from interpretation, and description from explanation. It also reminds us that context may sometimes belong within the phenomenon itself rather than sitting outside it as an incidental influence.
None of this removes the need for causal explanation. Quite the opposite. Better description creates a more defensible basis for asking causal questions because it becomes clearer what the explanation is actually supposed to account for.
Before deciding that a pattern is caused by cognition, physiology, learning, relationships, environment or any other process, there is therefore an earlier question worth asking:
What is the current organisation of the human system, at the level of analysis relevant to the question we are trying to answer?
That question is deliberately modest. It does not promise a comprehensive theory of the person. Its value lies in making the next question more precise.
